GHD: FAQ
Ebooks: God, History, & Dialectic
Installation/Registration
Where do I get a license key?
You can purchase one at [this web site]
Once I install the book, how do I activate it with my key?
Go [here].
Is the Ebook file installable on non-MICROSOFT or non-PC based systems?
The file works on Microsoft Windows PC systems and may work on some similar systems that can run an .exe file. If you’re unsure whether your system can run this type of file, download the book with sample chapter and try it BEFORE purchasing a registration key. Note: there are no refunds on registration keys.
Will the Ebook file work on a Mac?
It does not work on an ordinary MAC. Executables will not run on older MAC operating systems, but the new Intel MACs will solve this issue. You may be able to install a PC emulator to your Mac and run and register the file that way - e.g. VirtualPC for MAC or Parallels for MAC - but this is not a tested method. If you’re unsure whether your system can run this type of file, download the book with sample chapter and try it BEFORE purchasing a registration key. Note: there are no refunds on registration keys.
Will it eventually have Mac compatibility?
MAC compatibility is not such an easy solution, which is why no PDF protection system offers it really except Adobe. And it’s too expensive even consider using . . . . Luckily thanks to the new INTEL MACs the days of needing a separate version for MAC users is nearing an end. In the meantime, you might want to install it on a Windows based computer at work, etc. You can deactivate the license on that computer at any time.
I have Opera Browser, and am having trouble downloading the book.
Open up either Firefox or IE (internet explorer) use that for the download just this once. That should do the trick.
Can I install the ebook on more than once computer?
Yes, you can install it on as many computers as you like, but it will only display the sample chapter unless you input a unique registration key. The registration key can only be used on one computer at a time.
Can’t I simply unregister the book on one of my computers and register it on the other when I want to use it there?
Certainly. It’s about two clicks to unregister the book on one computer, and a couple of clicks to input the registration key into the book on the other computer.
Can I buy more than one registration key?
Certainly. You can purchase as many as you like.
Why does it only display the Prolegomena, and not all four volumes?
It isn’t yet registered. You’ll want to get a registration key.
How can I unregister GHD on this computer, so I can register it on another computer?
On the upper left, next to the Ebook dropdown, click the HELP dropdown and unregister.
Problems Viewing the Book
When I open the ebook interface, it doesn’t do anything..
The time to load will vary depending on your system resources (available RAM, etc.) . Also, if your firewall has popped up a little window, it may be asking you to permit the interface to run - see if there’s a popup window behind the current one.
I already told my firewall to disallow the book. How can I change that?
It depends on whether you told it to block it just this once or permanently. If just this once, you should be able to either close and restart the book, or else restart the computer (depending on your firewall). If you told it to block the book permanently, the way to change that setting will vary based on your firewall, since every firewall is different. You can either go into the firewall to permit the connection, or else temporarily disable your firewall, then close and run the ebook interface again.
Why does it need to phone home?
It needs to connect to the internet to verify your registration key.
Technical Question: On what ports does the book connect?
The eBook requires the firewall to allow it to access www.secure-ebook.com on ports 80 and 443
What if I absolutely cannot connect when I try to register the book?
Firewall. Even if you completely shut down your firewall, modern firewalls have some degree of ‘passive blocking’. If they’ve blocked something when running, they’ll continue to block it even if shut down. Some anti-spyware, and other security software toolbars, etc. do the same thing. Register in Safe Mode with Networking. If that works, it was something running in the background on your computer that was interfering.
Should I try it on another computer?
Sure, if you have one. That will tell you if it’s computer-specific. If it is, something about the one computer is the problem. If not, it’s something common to both computers.

The Environment
Is it in pure text or scanned format?
It’s in scanned format, but it has been augmented with additional features common to pure-text environments, including some keyword search capability (by volume). The typeface in scanned format, of course, can be slightly less crisp than a pure text environment, but there is also some value to having a copy of the original typeset manuscript. We hope to have a pure text version out at some future date.
If I want to print out a copy to read, can I?
Yes, as long as you do not distribute it, it is not used to circumvent purchasing licenses for other people and, if you decide no longer to use the print copy, you destroy it rather than distribute it.
Does the book include bookmarks?
Yes, for convenience, each page of the four volumes is an individual bookmark.
How do I navigate between volumes?
On the upper left (not on the right), select the Ebook dropdown, and jump to the volume or section of your choice.
How can I enlarge the text to make it easier to read?
You can click the + or - on the standard Adobe portion of the interface to make it larger or smaller.
The text seems a little fuzzy or unclear.
You should optimize your viewer. Since the text is actually a scanned manuscript (a graphic), it can appear too fuzzy when not enlarged to optimum size. It’s recommended that you click the plus icon at the top (center) and enlarge to 400% when in volumes 1-4, which makes for a nice large print screen, and clearer text. If you plan to activate the search bar and do keyword searches, you may want to tweak the size to whatever is most convenient.
The text is too far to the right or the left.
There’s a sliding bar at the bottom, similar to the one on the far right. You can set that to the center of the page, set your zoom to 400% or less, and it should solve the problem.
The search feature finds my keywords perfectly, and the text in the book itself is flawless, but the search window displays some odd gibberish near the keywords.
Ah, you’ve hit upon one of the unique features of the current electronic edition. Being scanned from the original manuscript would normally make these volumes unsearchable. However, we’ve implemented a keyword search feature that recognizes a lot of ordinary words like “dialectic” or “filioque”. But when it looks at the text around some of those words, it does not necessarily recognize it. It’s a compromise between not retyping all four volumes of work, preserving the original manuscript style, look, and feel, and yet providing a pretty decent search facility.
Does the search feature search all four volumes at once, or individually?
Individually. This was a compromise to make the search effective while keeping searches quick. If we’d broken searches down by chapter, they’d be instantaneous but fairly useless. Having it search all 4 volumes at once would slow it down considerably. Making each of the four volumes separately searchable, given the current limitations of the technology, was a reasonable compromise.
Are you going to have a CD/DVD version of the book?
No, but you can download and burn the file to a CD.
Refunds
Do you accept refund requests?
No, sorry, we cannot offer or accept refunds on ebook licenses.
